Sunday 22 March 2026 – Lanark Racecourse

Conditions: Bright, windy, with a strong diagonal cross‑field breeze.

Final Score

Lanark 35 – 55 Dalziel

Overview

This match represented a major milestone for Dalziel’s young squad. Having suffered two comprehensive defeats to Lanark earlier in the season, this fixture marked a significant turnaround and a memorable scalp.

Dalziel travelled with a 21‑player squad, while Lanark had only 9 available, so Dalziel loaned 4 players and rotated several more into Lanark shirts to ensure a competitive and enjoyable game. Both teams adapted brilliantly and displayed excellent attitude and sportsmanship throughout.

Playing Styles

Lanark’s attack was centred around one exceptionally strong and dynamic ball‑carrier who scored all their tries and was a constant threat. The rest of their squad worked hard in support but naturally saw less ball due to this direct approach.

Dalziel, in contrast, produced a balanced, team‑focused performance. Every player contributed — in defence, rucking, breakdown pressure, handling, support, and work rate off the ball — creating a cohesive and effective style that paid dividends later in the match.

First Half

Lanark struck first through their main runner. Dalziel — playing into the wind — responded with disciplined, aggressive defence: strong tackling, excellent line speed, and sharp breakdown reactions that shut down multiple Lanark attacks.

Dalziel replied through Reme, and both teams traded tries throughout the half. With four tries each, the difference came from the tee — Lanark converted two additional kicks, giving them the lead.

Alan’s Try – A Team Rugby Highlight

Dalziel’s best attacking moment was the brilliantly constructed try finished by Alan. Over five phases, the team carried hard, secured quick ball, and repeatedly won the gainline before Alan spotted space on the blindside and burst from the base of the ruck to finish a superb team try.

Half‑time: Lanark 28 – Dalziel 24
(4 tries each, with Lanark converting two more kicks)

Second Half

Dalziel’s intensity — constantly moving the point of attack — stretched Lanark’s smaller core squad, leading to fatigue as the half wore on.

The Scrum Battle

A standout feature was the fiercely contested scrum. Dalziel’s forwards applied consistent pressure, forcing Lanark to work hard just to secure their own ball. Both sides even won ball against the head, leading to unpredictable turnovers and requiring backlines to switch roles instantly — a brilliant learning experience and great spectacle.

Dalziel Take Control

With fresh legs entering the game regularly, Dalziel pulled away:
Reme scored a converted try
Arik added another, also converted
Reme completed his hat‑trick
Angus closed out the match with two more tries, one converted, completing his own hat‑trick
Lanark showed tremendous determination, but Dalziel’s teamwork, depth, and structure proved decisive.
Dalziel Try Scorers

Reme – 3 tries
Angus – 3 tries
Arik – 2 tries
Alan – 1 try

Conversions
Alan: 4/6 Handled kicking duties for the first three‑quarters before switching to play for Lanark.
Angus: 1/3 Took over kicking for Dalziel once Alan moved to Lanark.

Man of the Match ANGUS

A superb all‑round performance featuring strong running, incisive passing, aggressive defence, support play, and excellent work rate — capped with a hat‑trick of tries.

He also produced several crucial tackles on Lanark’s standout ball‑carrier, preventing what could have been decisive line breaks. Without those interventions, which were framed in the context of an organised and determined collective defensive effort; the game may well have swung the other way. His contribution was influential without overshadowing the collective team effort.
