Dalziel U13 vs Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart

Sunday 22 February 2026 – Ladies Walk, Stranraer Final Score: Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart 61 – 12 Dalziel

A committed squad of twenty Dalziel U13 players made the long journey to Ladies Walk, Stranraer, to face Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart — a ground that disappointingly has seen very few visiting sides this season. Conditions added to the challenge, with the first half played uphill and into a strong wind.

One of the standout features of Dalziel’s performance was their superior scrum, which consistently caused problems for the home side. The forwards applied immense pressure, disrupted the opposition’s set piece, and won two scrums against‑the‑head, showcasing outstanding technical and physical dominance.

Quarter 1 – Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart 19–0 Dalziel

Dalziel started well, enjoying an even share of possession and territory despite the slope and wind. The team carried strongly, recycled accurately, and competed well in tight exchanges.

However, turnovers cost dearly. Each time Dalziel lost the ball, the home side counter‑attacked at pace, with two big, rangy runners proving lethal in broken field play. These transition moments led directly to:
3 tries, 1 conversion for Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart.

Quarter 2 – Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart 33–7 Dalziel

Dalziel produced some excellent rugby in this quarter. They used well‑placed attacking kicks to turn the defence and put pressure on the home back three, with strong chases from the wings.

The home side added:
2 tries, both converted

Dalziel’s persistence was rewarded. A dominant scrum deep in the opposition 22 set the platform for multiple accurate phases, with superb ball retention slowly breaking down the defence. Alan eventually powered over and converted his own try.
Half‑time score: 33–7

Quarter 3 – Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart 47–7 Dalziel

The home team scored:
2 further converted tries
But this quarter showcased Dalziel’s scrum at its very best. The forwards drove low and tight, winning two scrums against‑the‑head and giving the team a huge lift.
Dalziel created several promising attacks through strong phase play, but a few knock‑ons at key times prevented further scoring.

Quarter 4 – Full‑time: Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart 61–12 Dalziel

This was the most balanced and competitive period of the match.
Early in the quarter, the referee called for uncontested scrums, likely due to the significant pressure Dalziel’s forwards were applying against the smaller home pack — with safety taking priority.
The home side added:
2 more converted tries

Dalziel finished strongly, working through controlled phases and showing great determination. Angus crossed for an unconverted try, rounding off a spirited final quarter.

Man of the Match – Arik

Arik, who only started playing rugby this season, delivered an outstanding all‑round performance. He carried with determination, tackled bravely, and covered huge ground throughout the match. His exceptional work rate and attitude earned him a fully deserved Man of the Match award.

Full‑time Score: 61–12
