|Dalziel 2nd XV:||93|
Triple hat trick beats losing streak
Dalziel 2nd XV got back to winning ways on saturday with a comprehensive 93 - 19 win over a depleted Kirkcaldy. Dalziel had to give Kirkcaldy two players as they had only 13 players available , but all credit to them for wanting to fulfill the game in the spirit of rugby rather than cancel.
From a lineout shortly after kick off , Dalziel pack caught on drove maul 20 metres , set up a ruck from which Grant Stewart broke away and scored in corner. This was a good baptism for Grant in his first Senior game for Dalziel at 16 years old.
This gave Dalziel the confidence to run most plays. From a kick through by Kirkcaldy into our 22 , John Phillips scooped ball up at went into the Kirkcaldy defence , a quick ruck then saw ball moved wide to David Aitken who ran in from the 10 metre line for a fine score. Scott Johnstone converted 12- 0 (10mins )
The Dalziel forwards then started running at Kirkcaldy and after the backs had set up a ruck the ball was spun out to Stuart McLelland at centre and then onto hulking teenwolf Eddy on the wing for him to run last 15 metres to score. Scott Johnstone converted. 19 - 0
The backs then scored quickly from a nice break from Paul White , Scott Johnstone converted 26- 0
Next from out 22 , prop Stephen Clowes made a break through the midfield defence passing to following up Darren Moon then onto David Aitken who kicked through for the chasing Darren to score. Scott Johnstone converted 33 - 0 (20 mins)
Darren Moon registered next score for a 38 - 0 lead .
Dalziel were looking running all plays and from one Lee McWhinnie got ball on halfway and scythed through the defence to score , which was converted. 45 - 0
Kirkcaldy rallied at this point and some good scrummaging in which guest Davie Jamieson and Scott Murphy had the Dalziel front row under pressure. From a scrum kirkcaldy moved ball wide to outflank the napping Dalziel defence for a good score. H/T 45 - 5
Dalziel responded quickly at start of half and a break by Paul White counter attack from a kick running back to their 22 , put Lee McWhinnie away for another score in corner. 50 - 5
Not to be outdone the forwards scored through Darren Moon who followed up some good work and scored his third try of the day. 55 - 5
Midway through the half Alan Moore made a break and he was followed by Fraser McKenzie and the No8 got the ball out of the tackle to score. David Aitken converted 62 - 5
Kirkcaldy then had Dalziel under pressure and loose tackling and a nice break led to their 2nd score 67 - 12.
Dalziel then rresponded quickly with Grant Stewart getting his second try. 67 - 12 Quickly followed by Dalziel going to sleep again and some rousing play by the Kirkcaldy forwards with their back row to the fore , scoring a converted try.67 - 19
Dalziel then woke up after an earbashing from coach for their slack play. From the kick off Grant Stewart made a great break and ran in from 10 yard line for his hat trick. 72 - 19
Next up was Fraser McGlashan who emulated his dad Big Al in past years with some fine hands and a good break to put Scott Johnstone away from outside their 22 to score in the corner. Fraser McKenzie put over a peach of a conversion from the 5 metre line.
A Grant Stewart break next put Lee McWhinnie away to scorehis third and convert. 86 - 19
Last score came from another Grant Stewart break who you could have thought was playing on wing and not at hooker , moved ball wide for Alan moore to follow up a kick to score. This time Eddy Ferguson converted and proceeded to ask coach if next week he could kick the penalties whereupon he was to to wake up and stop being so stupid. F/T 93 - 19
This was a pleasing way to end a run of defeats but will only count if guys get up to training in numbers and have a good preparation to face next challange.
Musselburgh away next saturday will be a mich sterner test as they have big pack and have ran up some big scores since our last encounter.
