League game @ Brannock, 5/11/11
|Dalziel Under 18s:||15|
WINNING UGLY ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY
With clear blue skies, but on a sodden and muddy pitch, Dalziel Under 18s continued their competitive season with a victory ground out against a stubborn GHA side.
There were no fireworks on this damp squib of a game with the Dalziel team on the ascendency for most of an error-strewn first half. A number of scoring chances were squandered, mostly due to Dalziel players taking ball into contact when shifting the ball would have been the better option and much ball was turned over by the GHA defence.
After a sustained period of dominance, a Grant Nielsen penalty kick put Dalziel into the lead and after the restart kick off, Dalziel took the ball back, deep into GHA territory. A try was scored off a line out after a well worked backs move, giving Grant Stewart the opportunity for one his trade mark runs through the GHA defence.
HALF TIME Dalziel 10 – GHA 0
With expectations high after Coach Matt Brown’s half time team talk, the Dalziel players however, continued to repeat the same mistakes they had made in the first half. They were unable to get out of their own half and GHA eventually scored a breakaway try down the blind side, with No8 Peter Strain valiantly chasing back for the tackle that was in vain.GHA put the conversion over for a score of 10-7.
Dalziel still could not get out of their own half, even after many clear cut chances to do so. Ewan Watt was tackled exceptionally well after it looked like he had made it around his opposite number and with GHA’s confidence rising, the visitors managed to get over the Dalziel line from a short throw at a line out from 10m out.
With the conversion missed and the score now 10-12, the restart kick was going to be important and so it proved to be. The Dalziel kick was fumbled by a GHA player and for the first time the Dalziel pack got some momentum in the loose and worked the ball into the GHA 22. Stand off Cameron King made an inside break that lead to a penalty.
A short tap to Grant Stewart lead to a maul and from there the ball was fed out to Gary Colquhoun who made it over in the corner. The kick was missed and the score was 15-12.
A tense last five minutes was left and GHA were unlucky not to get over the line in the dying seconds when they came up short and then spilled the ball forward.
FINAL SCOREDalziel 15 – GHA 12
Although the weather was fine, the Brannock HS pitch was not in good condition and it was heavy going for both set of players from the off.
Dalziel were short of 11 players injured, or unavailable and a number of players were playing out of position. There was, however, still sufficient possession for Dalziel during the first half to finish the game off as a competitive match, but the Under 18s squandered a number of opportunities by not playing heads-up rugby and largely going into contact without sufficient support. Line out play was as good as it has been all season and the scrum went very well with hooker, Taylor Crawford having the upper hand, taking a number of balls against the head.
There are still some tough games ahead and the team will have to play smarter games than this.
