For only the second time since the 26th November last year the Dalziel team had a game of rugby on their hands, this time travelling to Dundee to face Morgan on a cold afternoon. On a muddy day it proved difficult to play expansive rugby, but the Morgan side managed to exploit a few overlaps early on, taking advantage of numerous gaping holes in the Dalziel defence and only good scramble defence meant the Motherwell men kept them at bay. Just before the break the Dalziel pack managed to push the scrum over the line from 5 metres out for number 8 Crawford Reid to dot down for a try, showing superb control at the base. At the start of the second half Dalziel felt confident as the score was close at 7-3, but the Morgan side proved to be too strong in the tackle and scored a couple of decent tries taking the full time score to 18-7.
The Second XV had no game, and the Third XV game at home to GHA Gazelles was called off, however a last minute run-out against GHA’s Second XV was organised to enable players some game time for the season run in. A scratch team made the short journey to Braidholm to play a well-drilled team. A lapse in concentration from the kick-off allowed GHA to secure an early score, but Dalziel replied almost immediately when Fraser McKenzie, playing out of position at inside-centre, sneaked over from close range. Fraser McGlashan added the extras to give Dazzlers a short-lived 7-5 lead. GHA ran in a further three tries before half time, and added a further 5 before number 8 Niall McKenzie picked up from the base of a scrum and crashed over for Dalziel’s second try. Fraser McKenzie hit the post with the conversion. GHA extended their lead further with another 4 tries to complete the game.
On Sunday, the Under-16s hosted Cambuslang in the Glasgow Cup, running out 20-17 in a tight affair.
Next weekend, the First and Third XVs host GHA and Cumbernauld 2nd XV at Dalziel Park, while the Second and Fourth XVs travel the borders to play Selkirk and Stewartry respectively.
On Saturday night in the Clubhouse, the Mini Section are hosting a Burns Supper in aid of the Primary 7 tour, sponsored by Turnkey Business Software, to the Kirkby Lonsdale International Rugby Festival. Tickets are £15 and places are limited. Please contact Iain King for tickets (firstname.lastname@example.org).
