League game @ Dalziel Park, 14/1/12
|Dalziel Under 18s:||12|
LEAGUE POINTS HEAD DOWN M74
On a dry, but overcast Saturday afternoon with no wind, Dalziel Under 18s played against a strong Dumfries team who had already won the West Regional league. Going into this game Dalziel knew that to win this and the last game of the league with bonus points, would still not get them into the National Cup play offs.
Dumfries started confidently and their big forwards controlled many phases of the game during the first twenty minutes if the first half, with exception of in the scrum where Taylor Crawford at hooker had his usual good game and started the match with two strikes against the head. Dalziel were pinned down for much of this period and it was only stout defending that ensured the scoreboard was not ticking over.
Peter Strain, Matthew Boal and Fraser Graham were to the fore all contributing with a high tackle count.
The Dalziel line was finally broached when Dumfries managed, for once, to get the ball wider than their Stand Off and they found some space out wide. The conversion was missed and the only other score was from a Dumfries penalty before half time.
Dalziel lost one of their most potent threats, when Euan Watt had broken the line and off loaded to Grant Stewart. Only a try saving tackle by Dumfries stopped Stewart in the 22, but unfortunately he was injured in the contact and played no further part in the match.
HALF TIME Dalziel 0 – Dumfries 8
Dumfries started the second half exceptionally well and scored twice early on to go 0 – 22 ahead. Dumfries might have thought that they would begin to gain the upper hand, but the Dalziel backs increased the tempo and made a series of excellent breaks with Euan Clark, Calum McKay and Euan Watt all heavily featuring.
A quick ball and a move to the blind side saw Ryan Watters make a break, giving Euan Watt enough space to make space and step outside his opposing player to run in Dalziel’s first try. Ryan Watters put the conversion over.
With Dalziel gaining in confidence and the ball being spread wide, Dalziel began to see some chinks in the Dumfries defence. Another sharp passing phase saw the ball moved out wide and Fraser Joyce ran hard to make a good score from the right wing.
Dumfries managed to score another unconverted try and also scored a penalty before the end of the match.
FINAL SCORE Dalziel 12 – Dumfries 30
This was another occasion that the Dalziel players did not appear to believe in their own abilities, but when they spread the ball wide with pace and energy they are exciting team to watch. When they play at a fast pace many opposing teams cannot cope and higher risk strategy appears to suit some of the game-winners in the squad.
There was a first rate performance from Euan Watt throughout the match. Peter Strain had a good first half and there were some good ball carrying from Fraser Graham and Taylor Crawford.
