2nd XV get back on track
Dalziel 2nd XV got back to winning ways with a nervous win over a plucky Perthshire team.
The team were nervous to get rid of losing tag from last week & also thought it would be easy as Perthshire only had a bare XV and no subs. Perthshire stuck in well and game could have went either way up until last 20 mins when Dalziel stretched away.
Dalziel had a strong start from kick off, hitting into Perthshire and putting them under pressure. We won a lineout and moved it wide though backs were drifting and this led to easy defence and Alan Lynch tackled into touch.
From a lost lineout Perth kicked through, Alan Lynch caught it on halfway and passed to Lee McWhinnie. Perth followed up well and put Dalziel under pressure, we managed to set up a couple of quick rucks and Dave Aitken kicked through for Scott Johnstone to chase but he knocked it on.
Dalziel then went off the boil, basic errors, not countering in numbers, taking passes standing still and not backing up break. From a scrum we punched out to right and pass should have put Lee McWhinnie in for a score but he knocked on. From resultant scrum Andy McLaren put their scrum half under pressure. From a lineout we passed the ball wide to the waiting Lee McWhinnie who again lost the ball forward , this led to Coach asking his mum and dad to get him Kenny Everret's Brother Lee Love gloves for next week as it looked like that would be only way he'd catch the ball! These uncharacteristic mistakes were not like the team and one could feel the anxiety in the players.
Perthshire then went on the attack through their forwards who made holes in Dalziel's defence but we held out and worked our way back upfield. From a scrum close in, Barry Turnbull forced the scrum half to drop ball and Grant Ferguson pounced on it to score 5 - 0 (22 mins) Perth bounced back on the attack with some good offloading and phase play and only some big hits by Robert Johnstone stopped them in their tracks.
From a scrum, Dalziel used a set move, Andy McLaren took an early loop from Scott Johnstone and put away Alan Lynch into their 22. From lineout we caught and drove over for a try; Grant Ferguson getting the touchdown.
10 - 0 (37 mins)
Dalziel should have scored again before H/T as we had set up a ruck and moved it quick and had at least a 7 to 3 overlap but John Phillips saw the glory score and cut inside only to be engulfed by Perthshire defence. H/T 10 - 0
In the second half game went back and forth, Ross Westwood with some good counter attacks and Perthshire then had a purple patch keeping Dalziel in their 22. We became nervous again and made some basic mistakes, Barry Turnbull's clearance charged down but we managed to regroup and move wide only for the same player to knock on . Nerves again. From pressure Perthshire got a penalty infront of posts to make score 10 - 3 ( 55 mins)
This became the pattern of play as we were under pressure, too frantic and never played any phases. Perthshire spread pitch well in defence, which we found difficult to break down and should have set up multiphases to suck them in to leave spaces but we attempted to break through on first and second phase.
Dalziel got over this and forced way into 22 and forced a lineout 15 metres out. We took clean ball and set up a driving maul and rummbled to their line. From ruck Stuart McLelland pcked up and forced his way over for a well worked forwards try. 15 - 3 (65mins)
Perth never gave up and kept up pressure on us, our defence holding out. From a scrum on our 22, Andy McLaren moved it wide and then placed a kick into their corner. We won their lineout moved ball wide only for Ross Westwood to be high tackled. We kicked penalty into corner and drove lineout, from ruck Stuart McLelland popped ball to Andy McLaren to dive over. Barry turnbull converted. 22 - 3 (70 mins)
Our last sore was a team effort. We latched onto a loose ball from the kick off for Stephen Clowes to barge upfield and with good support and interpassing fron Grant Ferguson and Niall McKenzie took play 30 metres upfield. The ball was sped along the backs for Barry to put Paul White away on the outside. He took it into their 22 and an inside pass to Ross Westwood who had followed up to score. Barry Turnbull Converted. 29 - 3 Full Time
This was a nervous performance from Dalziel but got a bonus point win and good to see us soring in last 15 mins. This takes Dalziel to top of league and we need to build on this by getting to training, which has slackened off in last couple of weeks. If we can train together then we can work out the simple mistakes.
Perthshire had come by bus and stayed a while after game and both XV's did them a diservice by quite a few players leaving straight after game. Post Match attendance is expected from all players for at least 45 minutes after game, to mix with opposition and friends.
Update 14/11/11 - Perthshire have withdrawn from the league, so this match no longer counts to the league total
