League game @ Braidholm, 15/10/11 - Match photos
Dalziel travelled to GHA hoping to continue their run of relatively good form from recent weeks. Before the game it looked like the sun was out to provide a nice day for running rugby, but during the game a light drizzle fell on the pitch making the ball slightly greasy although not too bad to throw it around.
The Dalziel team began the game quite tentatively, standing back from their Glasgow counterparts and allowing them to gain good ground by not tackling them straight away. Some good kicking by Harris and Simpson however, kept GHA within their own half for the opening part of the match. The deadlock was broken by a Simpson penalty for Dalziel, but GHA returned with interest in the form of ex Glasgow Warriors player Hefin O’Hare. The outside centre broke through a weak attempted tackl from first phase lineout ball in Dalziels half and used his electrifying pace to round the remaining defenders and score just right of the posts.
Dalziel then played some good controlled rugby, using their forward pack to good effect but a number of mistakes meant GHA then gained possession and were able to make good ground and play territorially, pushing Dalziel back into their half. Indiscipline at the ruck cost Dalziel 3 points from a penalty by the GHA kicker. The re-start from the penalty was put out on the full, giving the home side a scrum in the middle of the park. O’Hare ran down the blind side and broke an attempte tackle by Harris for the second time, then was brought down by replacement Kris Hughes - on for the injured Ewan Stewart. Quick ball proved costly for the Motherwell boys as the scrum half spotted a huge overlap and set the winger scampering along the touchline unchallenged to score a second try.
Dalziel again managed to keep the ball down in the home side’s half thanks to a few penalties awarded, but contrary to previous weeks the lineout was not functioning well all day and GHA were able to get the ball back at scrum time after a squint throw or by stealing it directly. However, Simpson added a second penalty on the stroke of half time to make the half time score 18-6 in favour of the home side.
GHA endured a period of quite intense pressure on the Dalziel line from the beginning of the second half but good defence by the away side kept them out. From a 22 drop out however, GHA moved the ball to centre O’Hare who, again, waltzed through the defensive line virtually untouched and scored his second try of the day in the corner.
Dalziel worked their way into the game midway through the second half, and got a try of their own. Flanker Kris Hughes made a storming run down the wing from turnover ball, beating 4 tacklers and setting up quick ruck ball for Donnachie to use. The ball was spun to the other side of the pitch and an inside pass from Gillon Duguid sent Donnachie over in the corner. Now the Dalziel team were playing their own game without worrying about what their opponents could do, as seemed to be the case in the first half. The away side then had another opportunity for a try in the same corner, as a half break and offload in midfield allowed quick ball to get to the wing only for Lewis Matheson to be put into touch. High tempo play by Dalziel created a number of half chances in the last 10 minutes-something which was notably lacking in the first half. The game ended 28-14 in favour of the home side, but Dalziel need to bounce back from this loss and focus on a good performance and gaining a win at home next week against Lasswade.
