|Dalziel 1st XV:||33|
Last season Dalziel suffered two disappointing defeats to Haddington, and on Saturday they hoped to improve this record with a win at home. The first half was a poor performance by the home side, as they had some encouraging play in the Haddington half but continuously lost the ball in contact or gave away soft penalties to allow the Edinburgh side to clear their lines, despite the strong wind against them.
The first points scored came as a result of a great tackle by Cawford Reid at the edge of a ruck in the Haddington 22m with George Sloan forcing the referee to award Dalziel a penalty due to the away team holding on to the ball in the tackle. Simpson converted the penalty kick to make the score 3-0. Minutes later Simpson doubled the lead to 6-0 with a second penalty. The score stayed 6-0 until half time, a disappointing first half for the Dalziel team.
After some stern words from coach Davie Wilson at the break, the Dalziel boys were determined to start the second half differently, and play the rugby they knew they could. They did just that, with substitute flank forward Kris Hughes fielding the kick off and making ground before the ball was spun out to former Dalziel player Kyle Matheson who returned this season, and he broke through the defensive line to take play deep into the Haddington half. Matheson beat two defenders and the ball was then offloaded and passed through three pairs of hands, culminating in Robert Simpson going in at the corner for a fantastic score. To his delight, Simpson converted his own try from out wide, taking the score to 13-0. Man of the moment Simpson then scored a second try 10 minutes later, thanks to scrum half Donnachie. An opportunistic box kick from a ruck allowed Simpson to win the race to the ball to take the score to 20-0.
Haddington were denied a try shortly after, as their winger made a fantastic break on the outside and was hauled down just 10 metres from the line. Following this, Haddington enjoyed a period of continued pressure on the Dalziel line, but some good defence in the tight as well as some poor handling outside denied them a score. However, the away team finally were rewarded with a well taken try as their inside centre ran under the posts unchallenged to score a converted try. 20-7.
Dalziel’s next try came from a new face at the club, in the form of 17 year old flanker Kris Hughes. A miss pass from prop Sloan put Craig Simmonds in space, he drew a defender and passed to Hughes, who still had work to do. Hughes managed to ghost past the winger and hand off the full back to enable him to complete his first try in style with a run under the post and a swallow dive to finish it off. The tries still kept coming for Dalziel as good pressure in midfield led to a turnover which they capitalised on, with winger Derek McMillan reaping the benefits. Sloan gathered the dropped ball, offloaded to Harris, and then young stand-off Andy Scott put McMillan in space to outrun the covering fullback for a try.
Full time score was a pleasing one for Dalziel, 33-7. A great day was had by the ladies section in the clubhouse during the game, and gladly the Dalziel boys were happy to put a good show on throughout the second half for them.
