Cup - Pool game @ The Gytes, 5/2/11 - Match Video

Dalziel travelled to Peebles on Saturday to play their second cup match of the season. Despite the very wet weather the Peebles pitch was in very good condition and the crowd starved of rugby recently looked forward to a good match.

Dalziel with some changes to recent lineups started the better of the two sides and commanded both ball and territory in the early exchanges. An excellent cross kick was plucked from the air by John Goldie but the winger was stopped two meters from the Peebles line and the ball was cleared. From any Peebles attack Dalziel were resolute in defence and competed well at the breakdown. On twenty minutes however Peebles managed to set up a driving maul from a lineout and despite Dalziel stopping the maul three times the ball was eventually forced over the line. The try was not converted and Peebles led 5 to 0.

From the restart Dalziel again were on the offensive forcing Peebles to infringe. Robert Simpson stroked over the penalty and narrowed the score to 5 to 3. On thirty minutes again Peebles gave away a penalty and Simpson made them pay with another well struck kick to take the visitors into the lead 5 to 6. The game then moved from end to end but it was the home side who kicked a penalty to have the lead at Half Time 8 to 6.

Peebles started the better in the second half and on 50 minutes gained a penalty which extended the lead to 11 to 6. Dalziel rallied and pressurised Peebles to kick away any possession they gained. On 70 minutes after an excellent build up Anthony Mitchell was released down the right wing and he went over in the corner only to have the touch judge raise a late flag for foot in touch. Dalziel were a little disheartened by this and some slack defence allowed Peebles to score an unconverted try. From here to the end of the Match Dalziel pressed Peebles for a further score. Time however was against them and Peebles were the victors by 16 to 6. This has a step up in performance by Dalziel from recent matches and they must now take this into the rest of the season. An excellent performance from the pack lead by the front row with a man of the Match performance by all three

Next Saturday Dalziel v Stirling at Dalziel Park.
