League game @ Dalziel Park, 19/3/11 - Match photos

Whitecraigs arrived at Dalziel Park determined to do the double on the Motherwell side and from the KO they took the game to Dalziel with some powerful sorties into the home side’s territory. All credit to Dalziel they defended well and by 15 minutes had scored two penalties through Robert Simpson to lead by 6 to nil. The lead did not last long and within five minutes Whitecraigs had scored their first try and went ahead 7 to 6.

The rest of the half was a dull affair not helped by some poor refereeing of the breakdown and this stifled the chance of free flowing rugby being played. After half time both teams had equal possession, but Whitecraigs struck first and their second try came on 50 minutes. From the restart Dalziel had second row Ferguson sin binned, however Dalziel mounted their best attack of the day. Some powerful running from Ross McAulay resulted in James Baxendale scoring a well worked try and the score now stood at 11 to 14.

Dalziel were unable to capitalise on this and gained no field position and, for the last fifteen minutes of the game, it was all Whitecraigs as they ran in three more tries. Dalziel were well outplayed by a more streetwise and organised side who are well worth their position as league leaders. The poorest crowd of the season trekked back to the clubhouse, dismayed. Final score Dalziel 11 Whitecraigs 33

Dalziel man of the match Steven Findlay

Having not won a game in five months Dalziel look a shadow of the side which last season dominated the field of play and now face an uphill struggle to achieve a creditable league position by the end of the season.

It was not all gloom however on Saturday as the 2nd XV recorded yet another win over local rivals and maintained their pressure on the league leaders.
