League game @ Dalziel Park, 16/4/11
|Dalziel 1st XV:||26|
Dalziel 1st XV finally back to winning ways
Dalziel hosted Perthshire who were playing in their final league game of the season and needing at least a point to ensure Premier 3 survival. It was the visitors who started well and scored an early try which was converted to take a 7-0 lead. For the remainder of the first half Dalziel then took control of the game scoring 3 tries, two by Anton Mitchell and one by Craig Simmonds and all 3 tries where converted by Robert Simpson to give Dalziel a 21-7 lead at the break.
As expected Perthshire came back strong in the 2nd half and make some excellent breaks and looked a dangerous running team and there was very little between the two sides. Perthshire scored a converted try first to take the score to 21-14. Then from a charge down by John Harris, he collected the ball and scored in the corner, the conversion was missed and score was 26-14. This score would have meant Perthshire being relegated and they came out fighting and managed another try in the corner which was converted and the score was now 26-21. A few moments from the end Dalziel missed a penalty from the front of the posts, much to the relief of all the Perthshire players and supporters. The final whistle had the bizarre spectacle of the losing team celebrating more than the home team who had just recorded their first win in 14 games and in 6 months as the losing bonus point meant the Perthshire remain in Premier 3 next season!
Dalziel now have 3 games left this season and should be looking to win all 3 which should be enough to climb the 6th place. Musselburgh who have finished must now wait and see how Morgan perform in their 3 remaining home games as Morgan themselves now need 7 points from those games to retain their place in Premier 3 next season.
Elsewhere, the 2nd XV played promoted Ayr on Friday night and plated some excellent rugby and where in lead at half time. However losing two back row players and a second row meant a weaker team on the park and Ayr scored twice and to win 19-13. Some great individual performances by all the 2nd XV players and with one game to go will look to remain 4th in the table.
The 3rd XV beat Cambuslang and the win means promotion as Champions of West Div 3 and the promotion for the second season in a row which is a fantastic achievement as most of the clubs in the league are genuine 2nd XVs.
Next week is Dalziel last home game of the season against Dunfermline and Les’s Bistro is offering a Curry and a drink for £10 and this can be booked on the forum post on the clubs web site. The 3rd XV have all booked and will be celebrating next Saturday so there should be a party atmosphere.
