League game @ Memorial Field, 29/1/11 - Match Video

It was close but no cigar!!

Dalziel continued their league campaign visiting Ardrossan who lie in 3rd place and are in the mix for one of the two promotion spots. The conditions were excellent for running rugby, however both teams struggled to play well after the long layoff. The match was not helped by a somewhat inconsistent display from a whistle happy referee!

Ardrossan started the better and had most of the territory and possession in the first 10 minutes and missed two kickable penalties on 8 and 10 minutes. However they did not have to wait too long to get on the scoresheet after a counter attack starting in their own half, the Dalziel midfield missed a couple of tackles and Ardrossan took advantage with a try coming from good handling. The conversion was missed and it was 5-0 to the home side after 11 minutes.

After 20 minutes, Ardrossan were awarded another kickable penalty and the kicker missed again giving Dalziel an opportunity to stay in the game. Another kickable penalty on 22 minutes was awarded to the home side, however realising their kickers were having an off day, kicked to touch and launch a good position in the Dalziel 22. Dalziel managed to steal the line out and kick the ball to safety.

Dalziel finally got into the game at the 32 minute mark. Following a good passage of play the ball was kicked to the side and the Dalziel midfield gave chase and David Aitken managed to touch down for the score in the corner. Dalziel kicker Robert Simpson kicked the conversion for the corner and the Dalziel now took a 7-5 lead.

Dalziel now took the ascendancy and started controlling the game better and started putting the home side under some pressure leading to some infringements. This led to a penalty being awarded after 39 minutes and Robert Simpsons successful kick gave Dalziel a 10-5 lead at half time.

Dalziel struggled badly in the second half and had very little by way quality possession or territory in the second half. Not long after the 2nd half began the home side scored a try and the missed conversion tied the scores at 10-10.

After 50 minutes Dalziel kicked a penalty to touch to the halfway line and won the line out and drove forward, however Ardrossan managed to steal the ball and their counter attack resulted in a try under the posts. The conversion attempt hit the post and bounced backwards and the score was 15-10 to the home side.
Dalziel were awarded a penalty on 55 minutes and Robert Simpson slotted it over to make the score 15-13.

Dalziel saw very little possession after that and this was not helped by Craig Simmonds being sin binned after 68 minutes for an innocuous infringement and a surprise to everyone. Dalziel then lost Eddy Ferguson to injury and the scrum had lost two powerhouses and for the next 10 minutes struggled to win even their own put ins.

The game ended with a try in the corner for Ardrossan and the failed conversion made the final score 20-13. The bonus point win keeps Ardrossan in the race for promotion. Overall, a fair result and Dalziel always had a chance to sneak it.

The next two weekend Dalziel take a break from the league to play their Premier Cup fixtures. Next week we play Peebles away and then play Stirling County on the 12th February at Dalziel Park.
