League game @ Dumbreck Road, 30/10/10 - Match photos
|Dalziel 1st XV:||20|
|Cartha Queens Park:||29|
Dalziel continued their league campaign at Cartha on Saturday, and after a good weeks training and game analysis were confident they could take something from the match.
The Motherwell men got off to the worst possible start and conceded a try after one minutes play. This stunned them into action and by 10 minutes the score was level at 5 points each after Anton Mitchell scored a well worked try. Dalziel continued to take the game to Cartha and forced the home side to infringe. Dalziel surprisingly did not kick for goal and decided to run the ball, Cartha’s defence was up to the task and they cleared their lines.
On 25 minutes the Glasgow side mounted a good attack and managed to go over the line from close play The conversion was missed and the score was now 10 to 5. Dalziel had another penalty five minutes later and this time had a shot at goal but the ball sailed wide. As we approached half time a good break by Craig Simmonds and John Goldie saw the visitors force a five yard scrum. The ball was passed from Ross McAulay to Fraser Stango who crashed over under the posts only for the referee to call a forward pass. One of many puzzling decisions throughout the afternoon for the players coaches and supporters. The half time whistle blew with Cartha leading by five points.
Cartha were instantly on the attack and forced Dalziel to concede a scrum. From here the home side managed a push over try and extended the lead to 15 to 5. From the restart Dalziel forced their way down field with some good handling and after tying in the Cartha forwards Ross McAulay penetrates the home defence to score under the posts. Robert Simpson converted and Dalziel were within three points at 15 to 12.
On the 55 minute mark Dalziel were now playing better rugby but could not add to their total. Cartha again kicked long and forced Dalziel to carry over and concede a five metre scrum.
Learning from the earlier try Dalziel scrumaged well and forced Cartha to splinter. To the amazement of all watching, and playing, the referee gave a penalty try to the home side and allowed them to take a lead of 22 to 12.
From the restart Dalziel again managed to play good rugby and forced Cartha on the defensive, a penalty to the visitors was converted by Robert Simpson. A further try five minutes later looked imminent for Dalziel, however a pass was intercepted by the Cartha centre who ran the full length of the park to score. The conversion made the score 29 to 12. Two cruel scores within five minutes which Dalziel did not deserve. They rallied again and after some excellent interpassing Mitchell went over for his second score. The conversion was missed from the touchline and the final whistle had Cartha as winners 29 to 20.
Dalziel had played better rugby this week and players and coaches were very disappointed with the result. All players gave maximum effort with Simmonds, Findlay, Reid and Watters worth an extra mention. Next week Dalziel host Boroughmuir in the cup KO 1.30
