Dalziel 1st XV:18
Murrayfield Wanderers:67
League game @ Dalziel Park, 28/10/17 - Match Video

Dalziel welcomed Murrayfield Wanderers to Dalziel Park for round 9 of the 2017-18 BT National League 3 season.

Murrayfield kicked off, and Dalziel fielded the ball well. Immediately, Dalziel attacked wide with Andrew Glover and Ryan Burrell making yards up the touch line. As they neared the line, Burrell was tackled by visiting full back Brendon Reid. Dalziel tried to recycle the ball, but a Murrayfield player cynically killed the ball, giving referee Ronald Innes no choice but to award a penalty try. With the new law changes for this season, this gave Dalziel a 7-0 lead within the first minute of the game.

On the 10 minute mark, Murrayfield won a turnover in the middle of the pitch. The ball was passed out to Nigel Sheehan, who was able to round the last man and score in the left hand corner. Jamie Millar missed the conversion.

Dalziel were playing excellent attacking rugby, but were being repelled by a combination of stout Murrayfield defence, and penalties against the visiting team. Dalziel opted to kick to the corner, but mis-timing at the line out gave Murrayfield a chance to clear their lines.

The clearance kick only made it to the 22, giving Dalziel another attacking line out. Dalziel mauled forward and when the ball emerged, Murrayfield had strayed offside, giving Glover an easy shot at goal. The full back converted and Dalziel’s lead was 5 points.

Within two minutes, Glover had put the ball over again. Dalziel had set up a ruck about 5 metres from the Murrayfield 22, but a Murrayfield player went off his feet and Dalziel were awarded a penalty to put themselves 13-5 up.

With about 30 minutes gone, Murrayfield secured a scrappy lineout, and attacked up the left hand side of the pitch. Dalziel managed to halt the attack near the line, but Murrayfield were quick to pounce and drive the ball over for a second score. The conversion was missed, and it was now 13-10 to the home side.

As half time approached, Murrayfield scored two quick fire tries to take the lead and the half time score to 22-13.

Dalziel were spending a substantial amount of time in the Murrayfield half, but the visitors were capitalising on any mistakes and were able to run in a further 5 tries to extend their lead to 55-13.

Dalziel eventually made their pressure count. A scrum on the Murrayfield 5 metre line was won cleanly, and Burrell hit the ball up. The big winger was held short, but Bengy Barsanti was able to pick up the ball and dive over to score Dalziel’s second try of the afternoon.

Dalziel were buoyed by the score, and were looking to push on and claim a try bonus point. Unfortunately, Murrayfield managed to secure two final long range scores to win 67-18.
