League game @ Hughenden, 30/9/17 - Match Video
|Dalziel 1st XV:||25|
Dalziel travelled to Hughenden to play Hillhead/Jordanhill in BT National League 3.
It didn’t take long for Dalziel to get things going. Fraser Skinner and Lewis MacSween combined to put Dalziel into a commanding field position. The ball was recycled and Andrew Glover spotted a gap and darted through. He passed to the supporting MacSween, but the centre was halted just short of the line. Bengy Barsanti, however, was on his shoulder to take the offload and score under the posts. Glover added the extras and Dalziel were 7-0 up after 4 minutes.
Hillhead hit back 5 minutes later, when Dalziel didn’t deal with a clearance kick properly, and Harry Perston managed to barge over from close range. Rory Harte converted, and then added a penalty to put his side 10-7 up.
Hillhead were holding possession well, but pressure from Dalziel allowed Glover to intercept and run into score from 70 metres. The fly-half added the conversion, and Dalziel were now back in the lead at 14-10.
Harte passed up a chance to level the scores, and opted to kick for touch. From the lineout, flanker Owen Gemmell broke through the Dalziel line and was able to score in the corner. Harte missed the conversion, but the lead had swung back in the favour of his team.
Straight from the kick off, James Baxendale put pressure on Hillhead, and was able to force a penalty. Glover slotted the kick and gave Dalziel a slender 2 point lead at 17-15.
Three minutes later, Daniel Bartlett and Glover combined to give Ryan Burrell space to score in the corner. Glover pulled the conversion attempt, but Dalziel were now 7 points up.
With half time looming, Ross Hamilton made an interception, but was unable to go the length. However, Hillhead killed the ball and Glover was afforded an easy shot at goal, which put Dalziel 25-15 up.
With seconds left on the clock, Hillhead kicked off, but Dalziel didn’t deal with the kick, and Hillhead won possession. They attacked the Dalziel line, and eventually Ryan Reilly burrowed over to the left of the posts. Harte converted, and the half time score was 25-22 in favour of the visitors.
Early in the second half, Hillhead regained the lead. A line out, 5 metres from the Dalziel line was thrown short, and prop Mark Barrowman scored in the corner. Harte nailed the tricky touch line conversion, and now Hillhead were up 29-25.
Having secured their bonus point, Hillhead were now playing with confidence and were throwing the ball about. The ball was spun wide and winger Jamie Maddox was on hand to score in the opposite corner. Harte again added the extras and his side now had an 11 point lead, with 20 minutes left to play.
Play was swinging up and down the pitch, with Dalziel looking to close the gap, and Hillhead to kill the game.
As full time approached, Dalziel had a line out about 10 metres from the Hillhead line. A drive was set up but was illegally stopped by the home side. Another line out was opted for, but Hillhead were able to steal the ball and Harte sent a monstrous kick downfield.
Hillhead won the footrace, and the ball was passed to Scott Halliday, who scored under the posts. Harte converted to take the score to 43-25.
Hillhead gave away a penalty from the kick off, and Dalziel again went for touch. The forwards drove towards the line, but were held up over the line, and full time was called.
