League game @ New Anniesland, 23/9/17 - Match Video
|Dalziel 1st XV:||15|
Dalziel travelled into Glasgow to play Glasgow Academical, buoyed by a strong performance the previous week. Dalziel were also welcoming back four players into the first team squad, so were positive of getting a result against their high flying opponents.
Dalziel started strongly, putting pressure on the Accies’ scrum, forcing a penalty which allowed Andrew Glover to push Dalziel into the Accies half of the pitch. From the lineout, play swung across the pitch, and it looked as if Scott Johnstone had put Ryan Burrell in for the first score of the match. Unfortunately, a cover tackle managed to dislodge the ball as Burrell went to ground.
Glasgow Accies tried to clear the ball from the scrum, but their backline was offside, and Glover converted the resultant penalty to put Dalziel 3-0 up after 9 minutes of play.
Next it was Dalziel to deny a certain try, Chris Woods looked certain to score, but Burrell and Thomas Quigley were on hand to stop the winger grounding the ball once he had crossed the line.
Glasgow Accies were awarded a scrum on the Dalziel 5 metre line, and scrum half Stewart Gray broke and offloaded to Jamie Loomes to score to the right of the posts. Gray converted to take his side into a 7-3 lead with 20 minutes gone.
Dalziel were making good use of their kicking game. Quigley gathered a loose kick and returned the ball. He found a good area of space, but was just beaten to the ball by the scrambling fullback.
On the half hour mark, Kris Mathie gathered a loose ball, and evaded two tackles to score Accies’ second try of the afternoon. Gray again converted.
With a minute left to half time, Accies spun the ball wide. Andy Brown took the ball towards the Dalziel line and offloaded to Woods to score. Gray converted for the third time to give his side a 28-3 half time lead.
Dalziel withstood some early Accies attack, but eventually Gordon McGuire snuck over to secure his side’s try bonus point. Gray added the extras.
Scott Simmons added a fifth, when he took a tight running line on the halfway and ran in. With 50 minutes played, the score was now 35-3 in the favour of Glasgow Accies.
Three minutes later, PJ Rankin scored his side’s sixth.

At this point, the time Dalziel had the ball dramatically increased and they were able to move forward down the pitch. Accies gave away a penalty, and after Andy McLaren had milked a further 10 metres, Glover put an inch perfect kick into touch metres from the Accies’ try line. A maul was set up, and Stephen Baird was able to dot down as the pack steam rolled over the line. Glover hit the post with his conversion attempt.
Unfortunately, Dalziel were not able to do anything with the swing in momentum. A freak bounce from the kick off ricocheted into Loomes’ arms and he was afforded an easy run in. Gray added the conversion and Accies were now 47-8 up.
With 6 minutes to go, Dalziel got their second try of the afternoon. From a short line out, McLaren popped to Glover. The fly-half noticed a gap in the opposition defence and glided through and was able to run in to score from 40 metres. He added the conversion to bring his side’s tally to 15 points.
With time almost up, Loomes added his third of the afternoon, and was joined on the score sheet by Ker Malcom. Loomes converted both these tries to finish the scoring at 61-15 to Glasgow Accies.
