League game @ Dalziel Park, 16/9/17 - Match Video
|Dalziel 1st XV:||20|
Dalziel welcomed St Boswells to Dalziel Park for the third round of their BT National League 3 campaign.
St Boswells cleared the ball down field and Dalziel looked to return play. As Dalziel approached the halfway line, they were penalised for illegal entry at the ruck. Craik stood up and slotted the penalty to give his side a 3-0 lead after only 5 minutes.
On the 15 minutes mark, Dalziel were turned over just inside their half. St Boswells floated a long pass out wide which bounced twice before being collected by Penman. The winger was able to cut back inside and dart through a gap in the Dalziel defence to race in from 40 metres to score under the posts. The conversion was added, and St Boswells were now 10-0 ahead.
Dalziel hit back immediately, after a penalty allowed them to kick into the corner. From the lineout, a drive was set and the forwards marched towards the line. They were halted and it turned to the backs to hit the ball up. Dalziel attacked the line for 10 phases before scrum-half Andy McLaren spotted a gap at the base of a ruck and dashed through to open the scoring for the home team. Andrew Glover duly converted.
Dalziel gathered the restart and ran the ball up the middle. They were halted by some resolute St Boswells’ defence, but the visiting team transgressed and handed a shot at goal for Glover. From 40 metres in front of the post, the fly-half cooly slotted the kick to draw his side level with 20 minutes gone.
The next score was again straight from the restart, with Dalziel giving away a silly penalty and Craik put his side back in front.
With 30 minutes gone, St Boswells pushed further ahead with another penalty after Dalziel had killed the ball at a ruck.
As half time approached, St Boswells were starting string some good phases together, but solid hits in the midfield from Ryan Burrell and Thomas Quigley were halting their progressing. This midfield pressure forced a slack pass, which James Baxendale intercepted and raced home to score from 65 metres. Glover converted and Dalziel had a half time lead of 17-16.
Early in the second half Dalziel lost Bengy Barsanti to the sin bin. Despite being a man down, Dalziel defended heroically, and kept St Boswells at bay. After St Boswells had broken through the middle, the cover tackle of Andy Scott stopped a certain score, and the support forced a penalty, allowing Glover to clear his lines.
As soon as Dalziel were restored to 15 men, they lost Baxendale to the sin bin for an “seat-belt†tackle.
Dalziel continued to repel St Boswells, but eventually Craik was given a shot at goal after a scrum infringement and put his side in the lead at 19-17.
Glover soon regained the lead for Dalziel with a penalty kick from in front of the posts. Despite playing 20 minutes with a man down, Dalziel had come out this period in front with 15 minutes left to play in the match.
Glover had a chance to stretch Dalziel’s lead, but pushed a penalty attempt from the touch line wide of the far post.
With 5 minutes to go, St Boswells attacked down the left hand side of the pitch. The scrum half passed the ball, but it didn’t go to hand and it looked as if the chance was gone. However Penman got a foot to the ball and was able to fly hack it on. He then was the recipient of a fortuitous bounce of the ball and scored in the corner. Craik missed the touch line conversion, but his side were now 24-20 up.
Dalziel had one last penalty on St Boswells 22, but the ball was turned over, and kicked out the pitch for full time.
