Dalziel v Musselburgh
Dalziel hoped to get back to winning ways at home to Musselburgh on Saturday and from the kick off looked as though they had got over the disappointment of last week's defeat.
Their early pressure was however repelled by the visitors and the home side conceded the first of many needless penalties to allow the Musselburgh scrum half to knock over the kick for a 3 to 0 lead. For the next ten minutes the Motherwell men were dominant and came close to scoring, had a foot not touched the touchline on the way over. Musselburgh have some excellent kickers and they kept Dalziel back with some excellent field kicking. On 25 minutes the visitors were again awarded a penalty, the ball was kicked through the posts to take the lead to 6 to 0. Dalziel again mounted an attack and some good play down the blindside by Barry Turnbull, Ross Donachie and Kris Watters allowed the supporting Fraser Stango to over for the first try of the day. Robert Simpson knocked over the conversion and Dalziel were now in the lead by 7 to 6.
On thirty five minutes Stango again was the try scorer after some good play by Simpson and Lee McWhinnie allowed the centre to go over for the score, Simpson again hit the conversion and Dalziel now had a 14 to 6 lead. Within two minutes the home side had again needlessly conceded another penalty which Musselburgh converted to narrow the scorline. From the restart the home side again infringed and the Musselburgh full back kicked the penalty to the home sides five metre line from where they drove the lineout over for a converted score, At half time the score line was Dalziel 14 Musselburgh 16. Stern words were required at the break and coach Wilson was instantly among his players issuing instructions.
The second half started with Dalziel on the attack and came close to scoring from a driving maul. They maintained field position and after a series of forward drives the ball was shipped to Anton Mitchell to go over for the score and Dalziel now back in the lead 19 to16. On 50 minutes Simpson knocked over a penalty to extend the lead to 22 to 16. Musselburgh again respond with the boot to take their points to 19. Simpson again scored a penalty on sixty minutes and the home side were beginning to dominate the match. 25 to 19.
From the restart Dalziel gain possession and some good play by Crawford Reid and Ross McAulay allow Simpson to score the bonus point try. The try scorer converted his own try and the lead extended to 32 to 19. Dalziel however continued to give away needless penalties which allowed Musselburgh again to score from a driving maul to give them 24 points. Good open field play allowed Dalziel to put James Baxendale away for the fifth try. Simpson converted and the score now stood at Dalziel 39 Musselburgh 24. In the closing minute, after yet another Dalziel infringement, Musselburgh scored to make the final score Dalziel 39 Musselburgh 29.
A good victory by the home side but work on discipline needs to be done before next weeks game at local rivals Hamilton.
