League game @ Violetbank, 27/4/10 - Match photos
|Dalziel 1st XV:||43|
Dalziel arrived at Annan’s Violet Park intent on winning the league title. On a pleasant spring evening they set about the task in hand encouraged by the travelling support.
From the kick off Dalziel mounted pressure on the Annan defence and on 10 minutes were rewarded when Robert Simpson kicked behind the Annan defence for Fraser Duguid to score. Simpson converted and Dalziel were 7 points ahead.
On 18 minutes after some powerful scrummaging by the pack the ball was passed to stand off Ross McAulay who released John Goldie to score in the corner. 12 nil. Four minutes later, a charge down by (Man of the Match) Steven Baird, forced Annan to scrum on their 5 metre line, Dalziel won the ball Craig Simmonds passed to Goldie for his second try 17 to 0
Dalziel should have had the bonus point before half time, however after great work by Goldie he failed to give a scoring pass to the supporting Simpson and the chance was lost. H.T. Annan 0 Dalziel 17
A pep talk by the coaches at half time and Dalziel raised the tempo for the second half. On 45 minutes a catch and drive from a lineout saw Simmonds score the bonus point try, converted by Simpson. Five minutes later they scored again when Ross McAulay went over after some excellent forward play. Simpson again converted and Dalziel had the game won and a lead of 31 to 0.
Throughout the match Annan had been resilient opponents and Dalziel had to work hard for each score. On 60 minutes after a good break by Fraser Duguid the ball was passed from John Harris to Barry Turnbull and finally to John Goldie to go over for another 38 to 0
The final score of the evening came from George Sloan after a great forward driving maul. The referee’s whistle blew for full time and Dalziel were National 1 Champions. The champagne corks popped and the lads celebrated in style.
A magnificent season and with only one game remaining away to Ellen on Saturday, unbeaten in the league is the remaining priority. The whole club can look forward to the Club Celebration Night on the 14th of May we have had success at all levels, make sure you are there
