Seconds Annihilate Ardrossan
The Second XV hosted Ardrossan Academicals. After a number of late call-offs, Dalziel were forced to start with 14 men. From the kick off, Ardrossan infringed, giving Craig Lewis a shot at goal. Unfortunately, Lewis pushed the penalty wide. However, Dalziel were not going to be kept scoreless for long. Ardrossan counter attacked from a Lewis clearance, and were met on half way by big hits from Dougie Clark and Danny Lavelle. The ball was spilled, and easily scooped up by Peter McCartin who raced in to score from 50 metres. Lewis converted to put Dalziel 7-0 up.
Dalziel scored their second soon after. Pressure from scrum half Andy McLaren forced a scrum on the Ardrossan 5 metre line, and the Dalziel pack pushed their opponents over the line, for Niall McKenzie to dot down at number 8. Lewis was unable to convert from out wide. Dalziel's third score also came from a scrum. McKenzie picked the ball, and popped to McLaren who out paced his opposite number to score under the posts from 20 metres out. Lewis converted and Dalziel were ahead 19-0.
Dalziel secured the bonus point before half time. Attacking the Ardrossan line, Lewis floated a pass out wide to McKenzie, who cut back in before offloading to Andy Mill. Mill was closed down by three defenders, but used his strength to power over the line. Lewis again converted.
Ardrossan hit back, utilising the natural overlap to score out wide and pull the score back to 26-5. On the stroke of halftime, Lewis missed a second penalty attempt, but Dalziel were still 26-5 to the good.
Knowing that Ardrossan had a man advantage, Dalziel had to score first in the second half to kill off the game. The forwards were playing great interlinking rugby, and one passage of play allowed second row Grant Clark to burst thrown the flailing defence. As the Ardrossan full back covered across, Grant Clark passed back inside to the supporting McLaren to run in to score. Lewis converted to put Dalziel 33-5 up.
Ardrossan were struggling in the lineout, with Andy Davidson stealing copious amounts of ball for Dalziel. Due to this, Ardrossan were now quickly taking all penalties, and Dalziel were failing to deal with this. One quick tap allowed Ardrossan in to score their second of the afternoon.
Dalziel were dealt a further blow when Grant Clark was yellow carded for dangerous play, now playing 2 men down for the following 10 minutes. However, they didn't let this set back stop them, and from a driving lineout, Lewis took the ball up to the Ardrossan back line and offloaded to Dougie Clark to coast in for a try. The conversion was missed, but Dalziel were now 38-10 up. Ardrossan scored their third try of the afternoon, taking it to 38-15. Soon after, the visitors scored their fourth try, and with the additional conversion, were now 38-22 down and hunting a losing bonus point.
Dalziel were not going to give up, and with a scrum on the Ardrossan 5 metre line, looked to repeat the earlier push over score. As the ball neared the try line, Ardrossan collapsed the scrum illegally. McKenzie picked up and went for the line but was held short. However, Mill picked up and was able to dive over for his second of the day. Lewis converted.
With the last play called, Dalziel had another scrum on the Adrossan 5 metre line. Another drive for the line was called and again Ardrossan collapsed the scrum. McLaren picked the ball from the scrum and passed to Lewis. Lewis closed in on the line, and at the last moment, gave a deft pop to the supporting Dougie Clark to crash over under the posts. Lewis drop kicked the conversion to end the scoring at 52-22.
