|Dalziel 1st XV:||79|
On a good day for running rugby Dalziel took to the field knowing that two victories from their last three games would give them the league title, and in front of a large home crowd they set about getting the first of these against Livingston on Saturday.
From the kick off it was obvious that Dalziel were out to dominate the game and within 5 minutes Gillon Duguid but in a good kick, benefited from the bounce on the firm surface and regained the ball, allowing him to pass to John Harris to score under the posts. Robert Simpson converted and the Motherwell lads were on their way to an emphatic win. A penalty from Livingston was quickly responded to when Craig Simmonds offloaded to young flanker Euan Stewart to go over for the second try. Simpson converted and Dalziel were leading by 14 to 3.
On 15 minutes Livingston again slotted a penalty only for Dalziel to immediately score again from a driving maul, Craig Simmonds the scorer. With Simpson converting, the lead was now extended to 21 to 6. On 30 minutes after some good close quarter play by the forwards Andy Hill set up Craig Lewis for the fourth bonus point try which Simpson converted. Stand off Ross McAulay pressed with a good tactical kick and from the resulting possession Fraser Duguid kicked cross field for John Harris to score Dalziel’s 5th try of the afternoon, the conversion took the total to 35 to 6. Just before half time Dalziel struck again after an inside break by Barry Turnbull saw him offload to John Goldie who released Fraser Duguid to go over the line. Half time Dalziel 40 Livingston 6
By 45 minutes Fraser Duguid had scored again followed five minutes later by Man of the Match Euan Stewart and Dalziel continued to press the Livingston territory. On 55 minutes we had the try of the day. A marvellous break by George Sloan followed by an offloaded to Euan Stewart his pass found John Goldie who gave the ball to Barry Turnbull who timed the final pass to take out the covering full back and Robert Simpson finished the move off. A great score for both the fans and coaches to appreciate.
The score was 55 to 6 and to be fair to Livingston they would not take this lying down and responded with a well worked try off their own 55 to 11. Dalziel immediately responded with some good close quarter play by the forwards and were rewarded for their efforts when Craig Simmonds put George Sloan over for a score. Livingston again responded and scored their second of the afternoon only for Dalziel again to take the game to Livingston resulting in a blind side break and a score for Crawford Reid. Livingstons final score of the day came on 72 minutes, the following conversion made the scoreline 67 to 25.
With five minutes to go Dalziel scored a converted try by Fraser Duguid who again in the final minute scored another try to make the final score Dalziel 79 Livingston 25
A marvellous win as a result of some excellent rugby played at a very high tempo. Dalziel want the league title and an undefeated league record. On today’s performance they will not be denied. They left the field to the applause of the marvellous Dalziel fans who look forward to the next league match against Ellon on the 1st of May. The 2nd xv had agreat win against Perthshire and on course to achieve the seasons goal of a top five finish well done to Maffe, Cammy and the lads .
