Friendly game @ Broomfield House, 16/3/14 - Match photos
A good number of players turned out for the second game of the combined “Dalhaven†S2 side on Sunday, 16th March at Cumnock.
The game consisted of three periods of twenty minutes despite good attacking runs from Scott Bell and Ben Shields, and great tackling by the whole team including Marco, Declan O’Shea and Calum Kidd, the Dalhaven team struggled to make an impact on the home side.
Cumnock kept the ball alive and went forward with lots of support, and the whole Cumnock team tackled aggressively. Dalhaven started out a bit pedestrian at the breakdown and though held their own in the first period, they struggled during the second and it wasn’t till the third period that they started winning the ball more regularly at the breakdown, with the forwards starting to work together and actively driving forward over the ball. The backs struggled to find their shape, not helped by the aggressive defence mounted by the Cumnock side.
Dalhaven came close to scoring on several occasions, just failing to get that last pass into the hands.
Cumnock scored 10 tries (five converted). Only two of these were in the first period of twenty minutes, five in the second and three in the last. Five of the tries came from kicks which were fielded and run back at Dalhaven – two from kick-offs, one from a drop-out 22 and two others from clearance kicks. All were scored by support runners with the original attacker brought down.
Four players were subbed off for injury (one of whom was lifted and dumped in an attack near the Cumnock line early in the second period and who has a broken wrist so will be out for a while) and there were a number of quite inexperienced players. Dalziel have two other good players out through injury just now, and this was only the combined “Dalhaven†team’s second game together. There were also a lot of good, individual performances.
Taking all of this into account, this is a far more positive performance than the score might reflect.
Final score was 60-0 to Cumnock.
