Cup game @ Broomfield House, 2/3/14

Cumnock Mud

With a pitch more like the Somme, Dalziel U16s had their usual slow start, conceding an early try to some good pick and go rugby from our hosts. They settled into the heavy conditions better than we did, and initially at least had the upper hand in rucks and mauls. Once we settled into our rhythm however, we began to make some headway, and dominated both scrum and lineout which secured plenty of ball for the backs which in better conditions we could have made more of. As things stood, however, we ground out a good win, which while never comfortable, became more likely as the game progressed. Once again we managed to hold our opposition to no scores in the second half of a match, and finished the fitter of the sides. Special mention to our half backs Andrew Gillespie and Ally, who both played pivotal roles in getting the forward momentum that secured the win, and Andrew Glover whose touch kicking helped us to control the game. Things to work on remain option selection/backs moves, which too often today broke down in midfield, although the conditions played their part in this. A good win in difficult conditions, and the prospect of a step up in opposition in round 2.
