Stuck in the Mud

Stuck in the Mud
The u18s travelled through dreadful weather to deepest Ayrshire to take on Cumnock/kilmarnock at Cumnock. Conditions both underfoot and overhead were atrocious and several members of the away support voiced their surprise that the game was not being played on the other pitch which did not appear to be a mud heap like the one allotted.

With several members of the u18s now moved up to the seniors a younger and slightly less experienced team was put out and in the finest traditions and despite the conditions, the lads tried their best to play the passing ,running game that has served them so well through the years.

With a slippery ball handling errors were inevitable and scrums were called fairly often. Dalziel were superior in the scrum winning their own ball and half of their opponents ball. Despite having most of the ball Dalziel were not going up the park as fast as expected and about 20 minutes into the game the stand off made the decision to kick. This proved to the right decision as suddenly the lads were playing in the opponents 22.

The forwards began to seriously put pressure on the Cumnock pack and a series of pick and go's resulted in a good try for Mullin. From a tight angle the conversion was missed.

The lads then proceeded to totally dominate the rest of the half, occasionally putting boot to the ball which caused misery to the Cumnock backs, however they could not turn the pressure into points and the half ended 5-0 to Dalziel.

The coaches made several substitutions at half time and it took the lads some time to adjust to the speed of the game and the conditions. The Cumnock tactic was to punt the ball high and long and this put pressure on the backs. It was in this period of transition that Cumnock scored a converted try.

Our full back Scott suffered a nasty head injury during a tackle and was taken off for treatment. During this period of having 14 men on the park, Cumnock scored a second converted try. Score Dalziel 5 Cumnock 14.

With 15 men on the park and a new determination Dalziel rallied and started to run the ball better. Some good interlinking between forwards and backs resulted in Skinner making a great run and beating the Cumnock defence. The conversion was missed. Score Dalziel 10 Cumnock 14.

Dalziel were now totally dominating the game, winning almost every set piece and applying real pressure in the opponents half. This culminated in a series of rucks around the Cumnock line and several attempts to get over resulted in 2 "trys" being judged by the ref as being held up. However the pressure was still being put on the Cumnock defence and with less than 2 minutes to go a ruck formed 7 metres out in the left hand corner of the park. Stand off Stokes went short and signalled scrum half Westwood to pass left. Stokes went over in the corner for a good try but from a tight angle he missed the conversion. Score Dalziel 15 Cumnock 14.

With barely a minute left on the clock, we thought it was all over but 4 minutes later Cumnock scored the winning try and the lads were disappointed at providing a weak defence, failing to stop a easy try.

Final Score Dalziel 15 Cumnock 19
