League game @ Dalziel Park, 22/3/14
|Dalziel 1st XV:||10|
|West of Scotland:||27|
Dalziel welcomed West of Scotland to Dalziel Park for the final game of season 2013/14. With both teams confirmed to relegation weeks previously, there was nothing but pride at stake in this encounter.
Things started badly for Dalziel when a dropped ball was scooped up, allowing West to run in from the half way line and score a try after only 3 minutes. Former Dalziel player Ross McAulay was on target with the conversion to put his side 7-0 up. Shortly after, Ross Donnachie slotted a penalty to pull the score back to 7-3.
West pushed on the attack, forcing Dalziel to give away a penalty near the halfway line. McAulay sent the ball into touch giving West an attacking lineout in a good position. From the lineout, the West pack caught and drove over the line to score. The conversion was missed, but West were 12-3 up.
West of Scotland had a man yellow carded on the half hour mark, and just as he returned, Dalziel had a scrum on their own 5m line. From the base of the scrum, Grant Neilson picked up and kicked the ball out the pitch, thinking that halftime would be called. However, the referee indicated that it was not last play, and that there was time for West to have the lineout. From the lineout, West caught and drove, but the maul was stopped short by Dalziel. Unfortunately, the referee deemed George Sloan to have collapsed the maul and the home prop was shown a yellow card. West kicked for the corner again, and from the second lineout, successfully powered over the line for try number three. This try was converted and West were now 19-3 up at half time.
Ten minutes into the second half, Dalziel pulled themselves back into the game. A penalty was kicked to the corner, and a maul was set up from the resultant lineout. As the maul approached the West try line, the ball was popped out to Craig Simmonds to barge over. Donnachie converted, to bring Dalziel back to 19-10.
McAulay had another attempt to push his side further ahead after a Dalziel scrum penalty, but pushed his attempt wide from in front of the posts.
With ten minutes left on the clock, West scored their fourth try, and with the referee indicating last play, slotted a further penalty, to complete the scoring at 27-10.
