League game @ Dalziel Park, 2/2/13 - Match photos - Match Video

Late try denies Dazzlers Victory

With the Third XV game kicking off on the same pitch five minutes after the Second XV game had finished, there was still a large crowd in attendance for the visit of Cambuslang’s Second XV to Dalziel Park.

The game started at a frantic pace, with both teams trying to run the ball. With the two teams so evenly matched, it was no surprise that neither team entered the opposition 22 for much of the first 15 minutes. However, Dalziel gave away a penalty just inside their half and this allowed Cambuslang some space to create a hole in the Dalziel defence and run in and open the scoring.

Cambuslang continued to press and from another penalty, scored a second try, which was converted to take them into a 12-0 lead.

The Dazzlers knew they were the better team, and started to keep the ball tight and rumble it up the pitch, sucking in defenders, and creating spaces for the backs to gain some extra yards. Having got within 10 meters of the Cambslang try line, Dalziel were awarded a penalty and scrum-half David Ainsworth took it quickly and passed to Jamie Muir. Muir drew his defender before offloading back to the supporting Ainsworth to dive over for the Dazzlers’ first try. Andy Scott converted to pull the score back to 12-7 at half time.

The second half started with Cambuslang mounting pressure on Dalziel, aided by an idiotic yellow card to Jordan Donaldson. The Dazzlers managed to hold out for the ten minutes, and, disrupting a Cambuslang lineout, scored the equalising try. A loose pass was picked up by Ainsworth, who made about 10 metres before offloading to Kyle Matheson to score under the posts. Scott converted to push Dalziel into a slender lead at 14-12.

Dalziel were beginning to dominate, and despite losing Neil Simpson to the sin-bin, continued to push for a third try.

The third score came about in somewhat controversial circumstances, Cambuslang put the ball into touch and the ball ricocheted off a spectator, thereby stopping the possibility of a quick lineout. However, Matheson took a quick line out anyway, and with the referee not stopping play for the infringement, Gary Colquhon raced into score in the corner. Matheson was unable to land the tough conversion, but, despite the man disadvantage, Dalziel were 19-12 up.

Cambuslang were not out of the game yet, and with only seconds to go, fabricated a third score under the posts, to level the game at 19-19.
