Motherwell Times Match Report
DALZIEL H.S.F.P - 6 Pts.; HAMILTON ACADEMICALS, 3 Pts. At Low Motherwell.
The game started in a drizzle, with conditions underfoot very soft. It was apparent from the inability of the half-backs of either side to hold the ball that it would be a forwards' day, and the two packs settled down to a hard, if somewhat scrappy, game, the three-quarters keeping their hands warm as best they could. Hamilton seemed to be pressing most of the first half but they lacked penetrative power in the back division, and could not turn their territorial advantage to account. Dalziel on the other hand were always dangerous when near the Hamilton line, and the only try of the first half came when Braid ran up to the full-back and handed to Wilson, who grounded far out. Hamilton failed to convert. The second half was evenly contested, both teams scoring an unconverted try. Hamilton’s was secured by Young, who kicked upfield from a dropped pass by Gilkison, The bounce favoured him and he caught the ball and although tackled Kirkwood, was running strongly enough get over. J. Hamilton was instrumental in getting Dalziel’s second score. After loose dribble to the visiters’ twenty-five, slung out a pass, which was gathered and handed to Wilson, who ran over. There seemed to be a lack of spirit about the play of both teams on Saturday. Dalziel were beaten in the tight, and if the opposing scrum-half had been bit nippier, the Hamilton backs would have been seeing far more of the ball. For Dalziel. J. Hamilton, Maxwell, and Aitken were the best forwards.
The team was J. B. Kirkwood; J. Wilson, D.G. Braid, G.Clark, and H.Horton; G.Gilkison and A.Corrie; W.L.McGregor, J. Maxwell, J. Dickson, J. Hamilton, A. Aitken, F.E.Moir, L.B.Bishop, and N.J.M.Tait.
