Motherwell Times Match Report
Dalziel H.S. F.P., Ist XV., 8 points; Cambuslang 2nd XV., nil At Low Motherwell last Saturday Dalziel defeated Cambuslang 2nd XV. by eight points (1 goal and 1 penalty try) to nil. Cambuslang kicked off and were soon on the offensive, Dalziel having considerable difficulty in holding their heavy forwards. Good touch kicking by Dalziel brought play back to midfield, where Cambuslang were penalised. In spite of the distance and heavy ball, Willan almost landed goal. The Dalziel backs indulged in some kicking ahead and Hannah, following up his own kick, scored far out. Willan kicked a fine goal. Free kicks were frequent, both sides being at fault. The second half showed a considerable improvement in Dalziel’s back play. Gilkison was prominent on one or two occasions, while Hannah, Clark, Bishop and Willan had some good efforts. Dalziel’s second score, however, w as the result of forward play. J. Hamilton, while dribbling towards the line, was tackled and Dalziel were, awarded a penalty try, which Willan failed to convert. Dalziel’s forwards were decidedly below form in this game, especially in the first half, when the bustling Cambuslang forwards were superior. Maxwell, J. Hamilton and MacGregor were Dalziel's best forwards. It was fortunate for Dalziel that Cambuslang’s back division, with the exception of the half-backs, could make no use of the openings their forwards made for them. The Dalziel backs were good in patches. The heavy, greasy ball would probably account for several good movements breaking down when it came to handling. Two veterans made their re-appearance in this game, namely, J. F. Bishop and A. Stewart, Stewart, at fullback, got little to do, but Bishop, at right wing three-quarter, performed creditably. Dalziel’s team was—A. Stewart; J. F. Bishop, Hannah, G. Clark, R. Willan, G. Gilkison and A. Corrie; F. Nevie, D. Braid, N. Tait, D. Hamilton, W. MacGregor, J. Maxwell, P. Cowan and J. Hamilton. Referee—L. B. Bishop.
