League game @ Dalziel Park, 12/12/09 - Match photos
Saturday saw Dalziel maintain their nine point lead at the top of the league. The opponents were RHC Cougars. Conditions were far from ideal, fog hung over the ground creating a cold atmosphere. This did not seem to suit the Royal High coaching staff who seemed determined to have the game postponed, but to the referee’s credit he justifiably dismissed their requests and the game went ahead.
As Ross McAulay was unavailable for the fixture, John Harris wore the 10 shirt in an otherwise unchanged squad from last weeks win at Murrayfield. RHC started the stronger and had a sustained attack on the Dalziel 22 metre line finally thwarted by some good tackling by Kris Watters. Robert Simpson cleared the lines and play moved to within 10 meters of the RHC try line. It was not however until the 20 minute mark, after sustained pressure, that Dalziel took the lead with a penalty from Robert Simpson. A few minutes later saw John Harris swerve outside his opposite number and sprint past the defence to touch down under the posts. Simpson converted the try and Dalziel now had a 10 point lead as half time arrived.
The second half saw Dalziel continue to dominate the game with the only response being a long range penalty conversion by RHC on the 50 minute mark. The home side had a quick response, and after the forwards won a scrum against the head, the ball was quickly fed to Harris who accelerated through a defensive gap and scored his second try. The conversion was successful by Simpson and the Motherwell lads now had a deserved lead of 17 to 3.
From this point on Dalziel continued to maintain sustained pressure in the RHC half of the field and only failed to score as a result of dropped passes or knock forwards, justifiable in the cold damp conditions. However in the last ten minutes of play the handling came good and what followed were tries for Findlay and Simpson, both converted by the full back, and most importantly the all important bonus point win.
The referee, who had a thoroughly good match, blew for full time and the players and support headed for the warmth of the clubhouse happy with yet another quality performance from the league leaders. Final score Dalziel 31 RHC 3. Man of the Match Craig Simmonds. It was good to see John Goldie get a run out on Saturday and we are informed by the Physio that the other long term injured will return in January, thus strengthening the squad for the start of 2010
Next Saturday brings the last fixture of 2009 with a trip to Langholm, always a difficult place to go and win a game. Dalziel with their winning mentality and quality of performance will be confident of going into the festive break with the away win.
