|Dalziel 1st XV:||17|
Dalziel travelled the short distance to Coatbridge to play their first round Scottish Cup tie against Waysiders / Drumpellier who presently sit in fourth place in National League Division 3, exactly two divisions below Dalziel.
Despite the torrential rain on the Friday, the pitch was in remarkably good condition. Dalziel were not looking forward to the short trip for their derby match. Waysiders / Drumpellier have always been a difficult side to play against and given that this was a Cup match being played on their home pitch with new coach, the ex Glasgow pro John Shaw at the helm and more importantly a huge vociferous home support, the omens were not good for Dalziel.
After 10 minutes, Dalziel lost the services of their inside centre Barry Turnbull who suffered what appeared to be a hip injury. John Goldie moved in from the wing which allowed last year’s top try scorer and this year’s club captain Victor Czarnocki to come on for only his second outing of the season.
The first half was very scrappy with both sets of forwards giving away needless penalties. Waysiders / Drumpellier had the best scoring opportunity of the half but the referee adjudged that the final pass to the winger was forward when the winger looked certain to score.
Dalziel took the lead when Andy Hill’s long range penalty just scraped over the bar but immediately Waysiders / Drumpellier were level when a penalty for talking back was awarded in front of the Dalziel posts, with the Waysiders / Drumpellier stand off kicking the goal.
Kicking down the slope, Dalziel brought on John Phillips for the young Gavin Smith and Stephen Baird replaced Steven Clowes at hooker. Waysiders / Drumpellier kept coming through the middle but Dalziel’s defence throughout the match was excellent with some big hits being put in and they were needed against the big Waysiders / Drumpellier forwards. Slick inter passing between the Dalziel backs saw Czarnocki with the ball on the wing. His chip over the winger and the advancing full back caught them off guard and he was able to scoop up the ball and score close to the posts with Andy Hill kicking the conversion.
Waysiders / Drumpellier were never out of the match and with 10 minutes to go their forwards turned over good Dalziel possession but the ball surprised their backs and hit off the Waysiders / Drumpellier centre. Czarnocki sprinted onto the loose ball and kicked it on twice before he won the sprint to touch the ball down between the posts. Again Andy Hill obliged with the conversion to give Dalziel a hard fought victory.
Dalziel’s reward is a home tie on the 10th January against Premier Division 2 leaders Kirkcaldy. This should be an exciting match and will give the players added incentive to train over the festive period to ensure they will be available for this forthcoming Cup match.
