Friendly game @ Fullarton Estate, 4/8/12
A squad of some 25+ arrived at Troon for an interesting pre season friendly. The squad represented all three senior teams and the coaches tried to give all a fair crack in terms of game time. Marr fielded what must have been close to their first team using a squad of about 18 or 19.
The first 20 kicked off and unfortunately a mix up in the centres led to the opening converted try for Marr!
A pretty good restart kick led to a lineout in the Marr half and a strong tackle form McWhinnie led to a turnover and penalty to DL. This taken quickly but Marr were not 10 and not penalised. However not much later a further penalty for DL resulted in a catch and drive, and some good pick & go resulted in Simmonds bursting through two tacklers for a try which Harris converted.
Attempting to catch the restart Watters was taken out in the air and from a penalty just after this Harris missed touch but a poor Marr pass was intercepted by Westwood, Harris picked the ball off his toes accelerated through but was brought down. Quick ball was passed by Irvine to Lewis and a with show & go and shimmy through the disorganised defence he scored for DL, converted by Harris.
From the restart Ferguson was taken out in the air but this time a penalty was awarded. Again, however, a missed kick to touch and Marr returned the kick only for Watters to gather, make ground and then offload beautifully out the tackle to Donnachie who powered through before being brought to ground. Marr were getting away with coming round offside at the rucks preventing good flowing rugby, but DL managed to go wide and only an unfortunate dropped ball in the tackle prevented Scott Johnstone from adding to the scoreline!
In the resulting scrum Marr got an early hit and cleared to the waiting Scott J. He was perhaps guilty of slowing down into the tackle and despite Marr ‘sealing’ the ref gave the advantage to Marr via a penalty for holding on.
A quick tap and Marr were in our half only to knock on and Lewis cleared to touch after the resultant scrum.
Later a Barnstorming run by Simmonds took DL well into their half but they managed to put DL into touch.
Play eventually moved back up the DL end and a quick tap for Marr and quick ruck ball resulted in a try for Marr.
This pretty much wrapped up the first quarter.
Marr 2 tries DL 2 tries.
The second period started with Watters driving hard and offloading to Harris who grubber kicked through and won a lineout in their 22.
An unconvincing catch and drive led to a lineout for Marr on their 5m line which was cleared resulting in a 22m lineout for DL. Another driving maul took place but somehow Marr ended up with a penalty. The coaches had taken the opportunity to introduce some replacements who were struggling to find their match sharpness and most of this section was scrappy and disorganised and Watters imperious in the lineout was the only highlight. A poor clearance kick and some soft tackling allowed Marr to go up the left then score in the far right.
At the end of the second period the score was Marr now 3 tries DL 2 tries.
The third quarter kicked off and once again Marr tackled the player in the air!
From a poor box kick at our lineout Marr were able to exploit a gap and go over for a score.
McWhinnie tried to get some momentum and kick chased and scragged the Marr player and DL secured and went wide right and only a last ditch tackle denied Reid a score.
From a scrum on their 5m line again only a dropped ball in the tackle stopped a certain score.
Later on from some dubious foot action DL took a quick tap and a pick & go led to a score (scorer unknown, probably Irvine!!).
The period ended with a well worked score wide out left for Marr.
At the end of this period then the score was now:
Marr 5 tries DL 3 tries.
The 4th period came round and the coaches took the opportunity to field perhaps the strongest 15 available and gave them a target of scoring three tries.
DL need to get their concentration at the start right because once again Marr scored early on from another poor clearance kick!
Play moved down into Marr territory and from a scrum Simmonds deceived the Marr pack and took off then offloaded in the tackle with the ball gathered by McWhinnie who was hauled down just short of the line again. A period of mid pitch to & fro finally saw a great gain line break by Lewis from our own 22 which was well supported by Richardson who intelligently passed to Westwood deceiving the Marr defence and strolling in for another try for DL.
From the restart the DL receiver was once again charged in the air but DL reacted quickly to the loose ball and went wide to Harris coming into the line who offloaded to the support runner out of the tackle. However Reid was’snipered’ and a scrum resulted. McCallum then ‘snipered’ a Marr player and they tried to kick clear but McWhinnie caught and ran through about 5 defenders making great ground before getting quick ball to Lewis, but an overambitious pass was turned over. From the scrum, good DL pressure defence resulted in a penalty to DL. A quick tap by Reid and a powerful surge by Irvine resulted in a score for DL!
From the restart a scrum eventually took place in the Marr 22. Simmonds picked up, brushed off the 9, fed Donnachie who accelerated through to then offload to McMillan running a great line who offloaded out the tackle to Reid who was supporting and scored! This wrapped up the 4th and last period of the game.
Result Marr 6 tries DL 6tries.
Marr converted all but one try.
Harris got 4 conversions, and missed one, and Stewart missed one conversion.
