Bowl game @ Dalziel Park, 5/4/08 - Match photos
|Dalziel 1st XV:||23|
For 50 minutes there was only one team playing rugby and it was not Dalziel. A home quarter final tie with a large support in attendance should have provided more than sufficient incentive for Dalziel but they could not get going against a side who are lying in mid table of National League West 1 which is three divisions below Dalziel.
With their powerful set of forwards dominating all phases of the match Strathendrick started turning their possession into points. Winger K Campbell kicked a penalty in 10 mins. when a Dalziel player strayed offside at a maul. It was the same again in 20 mins. with another penalty for a similar offence. Campbell went for the hattrick in 30 mins. but his attempt at goal was just wide of the posts. However the visitors extended their lead with the first try of the game. They called a shortened lineout and won the ball. The forwards set up the maul and drove it to and over the Dalziel line for a try by prop forward D Spence. Dalziel had an opportunity to claw back some of the eleven point difference on the stroke of half time but Andy Hills attempt never reached the posts.
With the strong wind at their back at the start of the second half Dalziel were expected to make inroads into the Strathhendrick lead but again the visitors the visitors threw out the form back. They won a line out mid way in the Dalziel half and the ball was passed along the line to inside centre Matt McGrandles, the ex Stirling County player, who scored a glorious try by running a diagonal line that completely bewitched the Dalziel defence.
Sixteen points down with less than thirty mins. to play left Dalziel a mountain to climb. Andy Hill kicked a penalty to start the Dalziel comeback. Normally winger Vic Czarnocki scores his tries on the wide outside but this time Vic stopped a promising Strathendrick attack and in doing so stripped the ball from his opponent. This took everyone by surprise as he jinxed his way passed several players into open space then turned on the accelerator to score between the posts. Andy Hill kicked the conversion and suddenly Dalziel were coming on to a game. Two quick penalties by Hill levelled the scores to set up an exciting last five minutes and it was Dalziel that struck first. Stand off John Harris put in a long clearance kick which the Strathendrick full back should have cleared but Dalziel winger Stevie Paton’s pace took him by surprise and his kick to touch was defected in field and towards the goal line with Paton winning the sprint for the try which Hill converted. The try put Dalziel into the lead for the first time in the match which they held on to the end to win a thrilling cup match.
Dalziels’s opponents in the semi final match that will be played on 19/4/08 will come from the other three semi finalists who are Caithness, Linlithgow and Preston Lodge.
