League game @ Dalziel Park, 17/9/11
|Dalziel Under 18s:||14|
Under 18's come crashing back to earth.
On a firm, but very wet pitch that had been affected by a series of heavy down pours during the morning, the Dalziel Under 18s struggled to find any of the rhythm or passion they exhibited during last week’s fixture against Paisley/Whitecraigs.
After a slow start by the home side Greenock entered the Dalziel 22 and from an infringement from a ruck and Greenock Wanderers took an easy three points.
Dalziel continued at a lack lustre pace and after an attempt to run the back from a Wanderers kick ahead, the ball was spilled and the visiting team took full advantage to score near the posts. The kick was converted to make the score 0-10.
The Under 18s continued to have sufficient possession and territory up to half time, but many errors and dropped passes made life difficult.
HALF TIMEDALZIEL 0 – Greenock Wanderers RFC10
There was brighter start to the second half with Dalziel again having more than enough possession to dominate. After multiple phases, the ball was taken into the Wanderers 22 and eventually Grant Stewart crashed over to score. The conversion was well taken by captain Ryan Watters.
With the score at 7-10 Dalziel clearly had the opportunity to take hold of the game, but further mistakes and an inability to follow a well trained pattern of play allowed Wanderers to defend stoutly and wait for the errors to occur and then capitalise upon them.
After a failed attack by Dalziel when the pass had been unnecessarily forced, Wanderers won the ball and pushed in the home 22. From a line out Wanderers backs made best use of the available space and went over to score a try that was unconverted.
Much of the Under 18s game was not working well by this stage and with the Wanderers players growing in confidence the home side conceded another try. This time Dalziel failed to successfully clear their lines from a kick out of defence, allowing Wanderers the opportunity to run at the defence. Some good Wanderers support play aligned with a couple of weak tackles allowed the visitors score. The try was unconverted and the score was 7 – 20.
There was still 8 minutes for the Under 18s to turn the match around, but the necessary belief seemed to be lacking and although Euan Watt charged down a kick to score under the posts for Watters to covert, at no time did Wanderers appear under sustained pressure and never looked like losing the match.
